Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, soon after the creation of a New York State Farm Distillery License, Kings County makes hand-crafted moonshine and bourbon out of the 113-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The distillery uses New York grain, traditional processes, and unorthodox distilling equipment to make distinctive whiskey. At the Governor’s Wine, Beer & Spirits Summit, I recently had a chance to try their Moonshine and their Bourbon. The Moonshine was fantastic. It had a big nose of corn and vanilla and spice. It was light and easy drinking. A lot of fun!The bourbon was even better. I liked the smokiness and the semi-sweetness of it, as I do most bourbons. It was soft, and delicious!
Their moonshine won “Best in Category” for corn whiskey at the 2011 American Distilling Institute’s Craft Spirits Conference and Kings County’s bourbon won a bronze medal at the 2012 Conference. Find so and try it!!!
Also, here’s a really good blog post about a visit to this unique place. Check it out!
